Engineering Wain

Building a Multi-Platform Restaurant Data & Discovery Platform

Wain was engineered as a multi-platform restaurant data and discovery ecosystem connecting restaurant operations, business management, and consumer experiences within one unified engineering foundation.

The platform combines native mobile applications, a business web platform, restaurant management workflows, third-party integrations, cloud infrastructure, behavioral analytics, and operational tooling designed for continuous product evolution.

Engineering Challenge

Unlike traditional restaurant discovery applications, Wain combines multiple business domains within a single engineering ecosystem. The platform needed to support:

  • Restaurant operations
  • Business management
  • Consumer discovery
  • User-generated content
  • Collections
  • Reviews
  • Notifications
  • Analytics
  • Administrative tooling
  • Native mobile applications
  • Web applications

The key challenge was to maintain a scalable architecture across iOS, Android, and web while keeping business rules consistent across the entire platform.

Architecture & Engineering Solution

Rather than organizing the platform around application screens, Wain was engineered around independent business domains connected through shared backend services and standardized APIs. Architecture Components:

  • Domain-oriented architecture
  • API-first communication
  • Shared backend services
  • Native client applications
  • Swagger API contracts
  • Active Admin operations
  • Cloud infrastructure
  • Standardized APIs

This modular architecture allows every subsystem to evolve independently while maintaining consistent business logic across native mobile and web applications.

Platform Capabilities

Wain supports users, restaurant owners, and internal teams through a connected set of product modules, operational workflows, integrations, analytics tools, and delivery processes.

From Discovery to Decision

Key Challenges Behind the Experience

We focused on three key challenges in restaurant discovery: decision fatigue, lack of trust, and low retention. These insights helped define the product logic and shape features that make choosing a restaurant faster, easier, and more reliable.

Choice Overload

Too many options make choosing harder. Wain highlights relevant, trusted places to help users decide faster.

Trust Gap

Anonymous reviews often feel unreliable. Wain adds credible voices from local critics and influencers users trust.

Low Retention

Discovery apps are easy to leave. Wain uses collections, points, achievements, and social features to bring users back.

User Interviews

Users struggle with too many choices, low trust in anonymous ratings, limited personalization, off-platform social sharing, and an RTL experience that feels translated rather than native.

STEP I: User Surveys

Reached participants across Kuwait: students, professionals, families, and food enthusiasts. Focused on one core question: how do you actually decide where to eat on any given day?

STEP II: Key findings

Users relied on trusted people over anonymous platforms. They switched between multiple sources to decide where to eat, and often defaulted to familiar places due to decision fatigue.

STEP III: Bilingual research

Studied how Arabic-first users interact with existing apps. Found recurring issues: reversed navigation, broken mixed-language layouts, and interfaces that felt translated rather than native.

Understanding the Core Users

We focused on two primary personas to guide the experience, prioritize user needs, and shape the app’s key discovery flows.

John, a food critic and influencerJohn

As a food critic, I want my reviews to be clearly attributed and visible, so I can build a recognizable personal identity around my taste.

The Food Critic and Influencer

Has built an audience around their taste. They need attributed, discoverable reviews and a platform where their voice carries real weight. Without them, trust collapses.

Helen, a frequent restaurant-goerHelen

As a frequent restaurant-goer, I want to quickly discover trusted and trending places, so I can decide where to eat without wasting time.

The Explorer is the core user

Eats out regularly and relies on social recommendations to find new places. They want speed over deliberation - and trust specific voices over aggregated scores.

From Problems to Product Logic

Define

Defining the Right Product Direction

Built Around Real Needs

We turn research into clear product priorities, aligning user needs with business goals. This helps us focus the experience on faster decisions, stronger trust, and lasting engagement.

Quick Decisions

Help users cut through too many options and choose the right place faster.

Trusted Reviews

Make recommendations feel more credible through real people and social proof.

Ongoing Engagement

Keep users interested even when they are not actively searching for somewhere to eat.

Ideate

Turning Challenges into Product Ideas

Based on the core product questions, we explored features that could make restaurant discovery easier, more trusted, and more engaging. Each idea was connected to one key user problem: decision fatigue, trust in reviews, and retention.

Decision Fatigue

The Wheel of Fortune helps users choose faster by turning restaurant discovery into a playful experience.

Trust in Reviews

Trusted voices from influencers and critics make recommendations feel more personal and reliable.

Retention

Collections, achievements, and Wain Points keep users engaged and encourage them to return.

Problems & Solutions

Discover with Confidence

To help users decide faster, we created a Wheel of Fortune feature that turns restaurant choice into a simple, guided, and playful experience based on filtered suggestions.

Problem

Too many options made food discovery overwhelming. Users kept scrolling without deciding and often returned to familiar choices.

Solution

The randomizer lets users choose filters - cuisine, location, price, and rating - then spin to get a guided suggestion with less pressure.

Impact

The Wheel became a distinctive feature by turning “I don’t know” into a valid user state and making discovery faster, playful, and easier.

Design System & Component Consistency

A System Built to Scale

At 500+ screens, you need a system - not individual designs. Every component was built with states, responsive behavior, and bilingual support from the start. Defined rules, not one-off decisions. That's what kept 43 sections coherent.
